Course Overview

Summary

Excel is widely used for data analysis in academics and Industry. It is very simple and efficient tool to carry out small and complicated estimations. This course aims to impart the students the working knowledge of excel with an aim to equip them for handling various kinds of data. It also introduces the statistical tools available in excel which can be effectively used for carrying out basic data analysis for cross section and time series data. The course starts with basic operations in excel and then extends to estimation of descriptive statistics, correlation and regression. The course is designed keeping in mind of learners who have very little functional knowledge of Excel and those who like to easily do basic data analysis with Excel. The course is useful for students and researchers for analyzing the data of projects.  

Objectives  

  • To Discuss the basic operations in Excel
  • To train the students to use statistical functions in Excel 
  • To discuss the uses of Pivot table options
  • To demonstrate how to estimate regression and trend lines. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Students would develop an understanding of Formulas and Functions in Excel
  • Students would be able to fit and format graphs and trend lines
  • Students would be able to estimate descriptive statistics
  • Students would be able to create frequency tables
  • Students would be able to estimate correlation and regression

Pre-requisite Courses

a.       Compulsory: No prerequisite compulsory course is required

b.      Desirable: Introductory Statistics at Plus two level is desirable.

Unit I: Introduction to Excel

Unit II: Estimation of Descriptive Statistics

Unit III: Pivot tables: Creating Frequency and Contingency tables in excel

Unit IV: Correlation, Regression and Trend Lines
