Topic outline



  • In this lecture, we will be discussing the transition of AI technologies from mediators that people talk through, to the role of communicators – a role which was historically confined to humans.



    • The objectives of this introductory lecture are to enable participants:

      1. Explore the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and communication, highlighting the shift from AI as a mediator to AI as a communicator.

      2. Analyze the impact of AI-enabled communicative technologies on human perception, self-identity, and societal frameworks.

      3. Investigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the emergence of AI as communicators, particularly in the context of communication theory and ethics.

      4. Examine the role of gender and other human-like attributes in shaping human interactions with AI communicators.

      5. Critically evaluate the ethical implications of AI-enabled communication technologies, including issues of transparency, accountability, and societal impact.

      6. Understand the philosophical inquiries surrounding the nature of humanity and technology in the context of AI's role as a communicator.

      7. Assess the implications of AI's transition from mediators to communicators on traditional communication norms and theories.

      8. Explore the field of Human–Machine Communication (HMC) and its significance in reshaping our understanding of technology within the realm of communication.

      9. Investigate how individuals perceive communicative technologies and how these perceptions influence their interactions with AI.

      10. Reflect on the future trajectory of AI in communication and its potential implications for society, ethics, and human identity.
